Concert Etiquette

Respect

In an effort to ensure that all participants at the national festival enjoy and benefit from the experience, MusicFest Canada requests that all students and directors discuss the expectations pertaining to concert behaviour as noted below. These expectations have been created to ensure that all audience members will be able to enjoy the performances in a quiet, concert hall atmosphere free from distractions of extraneous noise and movement. It is important that audience members show the same respect for performers on stage as they themselves would expect of an audience attending their performance.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THE FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES AND EVENING CONCERTS

  1. Try to sit together as a group with directors and chaperones in attendance.
  2. Do not talk during the performances. Even quiet conversation will distract those people seated around you and may also prevent the performers from giving you their best effort. Remember to show the same respect you would expect if you were on stage.
  3. Try to stay seated for the entire concert. Most concerts are a maximum of one hour so you should be able to be seated for the entire performance. If you have to leave the concert hall for an emergency please try to do so between selections and definitely wait until an opportunity between selections to return to your seat. Reason … any movement in and out of the concert hall will distract both your fellow audience members and the performers.
  4. Remember to show appreciation in ways appropriate to the performance.
